Categories for the 2004 Picture Editors' Awards Announced

The Picture Editors' Awards recognise and reward the best of photographic journalism throughout Britain and Ireland. BG Group, Fujifilm, Getty Images, and Nikon UK sponsor the Awards, with additional substantial support from the Corporation of London and Diageo. CETA Imaging provides technical support and photo-lab services.

The Awards are open to photographers of any nationality who live and work in the UK or Ireland, and British and Irish photographers wherever they may reside. The prize fund for the 2004 Award's exceeds £30,000.

Photographers can submit their entries online at http://www.pictureawards.net
from Thursday 1st January 2004. Awards will be made on the basis of pictures taken during 2003. The closing date for entries is 12-noon on Wednesday 18th February.

Nominations, selected by a jury of 40 Picture Editors, will be announced on Thursday 26th February. The nominated images will then be posted on the Award's site, and all British and Irish Picture Editors will be invited to ballot on the ultimate winners in the portfolio and single print categories. Separate arrangements are made for the assessment of the Student and Newspaper of the Year categories.

Please note that there are special rules for the Corporation of London's Student Awards. Entries for the Student Awards will close at 12-noon on Friday 12th March 2004.

The Awards will be presented at a ceremony in the Great Hall of Guildhall in London on Tuesday 18th May 2004.

The Nikon Challenge Trophy
Presented to the College or School whose overall entry for the
Corporation of London's Student Award is judged the best

£2000, plus The Alan Harper Bursary of up to £2000

(All those nominated in this category will be eligible for work experience
opportunities, and will additionally receive film and processing vouchers to
the value of £250.)
