Nikon Press Awards Winners 2001 Announced

The winners of the 2001 Nikon Press Awards were announced on March 8 at a ceremony held at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells in London, hosted by award-winning American comedian, Rich Hall.

To enter the Nikon Press Awards, photographers are invited to submit portfolios of five images in 8 specialist categories - News, Photo Essay, Arts & Entertainment, Features, Royals, Sport, Fashion and Regional. For the prestigious Press Photographer of the Year section, they are asked to submit portfolios of eight images.

The judges, - Lee Martin - Global Managing Director - Allsport; Bob Kirwin - Picture Editor - The Times; Michael Feldman - Senior Photo Editor for Europe, Africa, Middle East and South Asia - Associated Press; Rod Sibbald - Group Picture Editor - Scottish Media Group; Giulia Carnera - Picture Editor - Elle; Russell Roberts - Curator of Photographs - National Museum of Photography, Film and Television and Jon Edwards - Picture Editor, The Sun, had the difficult task of choosing the winners from the 3,665 photographs entered by 390 photographers - an increase on previous years. They chose the following winners and runners up:

Four of the winning portfolios from this year's Awards were shot on the Nikon D1 professional digital SLR, including the Nikon Press Photographer of the Year - Adam Butler. The other three were Jeff Moore in the Royals category, Bradley Ormesher in Sports and David Moir in Regional Section.

As his prize for being named Press Photographer of the Year, Adam Butler received a cheque for £2,500, £1,500 of Nikon equipment, a gold and silver trophy designed by Garrards, which he will keep for one year, a framed certificate and £100 of free processing courtesy of Joe's Basement.

The winners of each of the specialist categories received cheques for £1,500, framed certificates and a £100 voucher from Joe's Basement to use against digital imaging services.

Each of the runners-up received framed certificates and £50 Joe's Basement vouchers for digital imaging services.

The winning images will be on exhibition at Proud Galleries, 5 Buckingham Street, London, WC2N 6BP, from 14 March - 1 April. A book of the winning images, published by Vision On Publishing, will be available price £14.99 from Proud Galleries, at www.visionon.com and from all good book shops. All photographs in the exhibition have been printed, mounted and framed by Joe's Basement. There will also be an on-line exhibition at Photoshot.com from 9 March.
